The Strength of Your Password |
|
This application was designed to analyse your password
and give it a score depending on its strength. It first
compares it to all known common passwords and then the
repetiion of letters close to each other which will
make the password easy to crack.
A good password should be a minimum of 8 characters
long, should include a upper case, lower case, symbols
and numbers. A password should ot contain any thing
that can be associated with you such as name, birthday
and relatives.
Please note that this is a dynamic function which runs
in your browser and does not send or store any information
you enter. In addition, please remember that the result
of this application is an estimate of how strong your
password is, thus no guarantee is given on the use of
your password.

- If your password is short (less than 8 characters)
or your password is common among known passwords,
then a Warning message will be given.
- The password strength is determined by the table
below:
Length
(bits) |
Strength |
< 28 |
Very Weak |
28 - 35 |
Weak |
36 - 59 |
Reasonable |
60 - 127 |
Strong |
> 128 |

- Entropy: the number of bits listed
for entropy is an estimate based on letter pair combinations
in the English language. To make the frequency tables
a reasonable size, all non-alphabetic characters are
merged together into the same group. Because of this,
your entropy score will be lower than your real score
when you use several symbols.
- For determining the character set, letters are grouped
into a-z, A-Z, numbers, symbols above numbers, other
symbols, and other characters. If your passphrase
contains a character from the subset, that subset
is added to the pool, increasing the size of the character
set and increasing the amount of entropy in your password.
